UK Industry first as Mr Soot Chimney Sweep Offers Career-Switchers A ‘One-Stop-Shop’

Mr Soot Chimney Sweep has launched a UK ‘industry first’ – a standalone, direct-recruitment website for a new generation of prospective new sweeps entering the trade. is the brainchild of the company’s owner David. And it’s believed the website is the first of its kind to be launched by a professional chimney sweeping, inspecting and testing company in the UK.

It will contain articles about becoming an employed chimney sweep, what life is like as a sweep, how it can be a viable career option for the right person and current vacancies.

It also sets out the broad career pathway via the brand new Mr Soot Training Academy programme, which has been specifically designed for new entrants to the industry.

The academy programme launch ties in with the introduction of new titles such as Solid Fuel Technician and Lead Technician – recognising the changing role of sweeps.

David believes it’ll be especially popular with ex-white collar workers and professionals seeking a career change – a feature of the industry over the past decade.

He explained: “A majority of sweeping companies in the UK are one-person bands. And of those that do grow, recruitment is usually done through an informal network of family connections or friends.

“Taking on an unknown quantity is rare in our trade, so therefore formally advertised employee posts are pretty much non-existent.

“But that model is no longer fit for purpose among a new breed of entrepreneurial sweeps.  These are sweeps who, like us, are looking to grow their companies.

“While the ‘friends of friends’ network is, in itself, fine, it only takes you so far.

“And it means you’re missing out on a potential pool of untapped talent. The truth is we have to reach out fully if we want to expand – that’s why we are launching this site.

“We are shattering the myth that the only way to enter the trade is to set up on your own. Self employment is not for everyone, but at the moment, anyone looking to become a sweep is pretty much forced down that route because of the lack of direct-employment opportunities.”

David believes it also speaks to a new generation who want more fulfilling employment.

“Most people do not understand the power chimney sweeps have to effect change.

“But whether it’s educating customers on how to burn in an environmentally-responsible way, or changing their perceptions about how a trades company normally works, the opportunities for a varied and rewarding career path are immense.”

2021 was a busy year for Mr Soot Chimney Sweep. The company took on staff and expanded into new areas of the North West, such as Liverpool and other parts of Lancashire and Cheshire.

David says the new website will not only help guide new sweeps entering the industry, but it will also help fuel further growth for the company in 2022 and beyond.

“We realise it’s very unique for our industry, or indeed most small businesses, to launch a standalone recruitment website,” continued David.

“But as a company, we’ve always pioneered new ways of doing things, which is why 2021 has been an all-round success.

“2022 is shaping up to be another important year and the site will be an integral driver of our future plans and growth.

“I am personally very excited about its potential; not just for Mr Soot, but the chimney sweeping industry at large.

“It’s a complete game changer and will help usher in a new generation of career-switchers and younger people who desire meaningful employment with a real purpose.

“It will speak to the dynamic, self-starters who want that while supported by a modern, professional and forward-thinking company.

“And we want people who are passionate about providing excellent customer service from beginning to end across an expanding geographical area to join us in this mission.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to sweep a chimney yet – we can train you for that. What does matter is you have the right outlook, values and ethos.

“Pick up the phone, drop us a message… it doesn’t matter. Because if the above sounds like you, then we want to hear from you.”
